Nature’s Classroom: The Magic of Jobson Bay Eco-Beach Park

Written by

My journey to Jobson Bay Eco-Beach Park was nothing short of magical. As I approached the park, the sight of pristine white beaches, partially lined with large red mangrove trees, took my breath away. Just offshore, nearby seagrass beds swayed gently in the calm, clear blue waters, teeming with life. I felt an immediate connection to the land and its potential for education and conservation. This experience solidified my belief in a partnership with Sea The Change Foundation.

Jobson Bay Eco-Beach Park features clear tropical blue waters, soft white sands, and beautiful red mangroves with distinctive mangled roots.

Last academic year, we embarked on exciting discussions with Mikhail Jobson, the Executive Director at Sea The Change Foundation, about forging a partnership between the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation and their organization. After several productive meetings and my memorable visit to Jobson Bay Eco-Beach Park in Falmouth, Jamaica, we are thrilled to welcome Sea The Change Foundation as an official partner in our J.A.M.I.N. program!

The Sea The Change Foundation is dedicated to transforming Jobson Bay Eco-Beach Park into a vibrant center for education, recreation, and sustainable development. With its stunning 385 acres of pristine beachfront and lush mangrove forests, Jobson Bay offers an incredible outdoor classroom just minutes from William Knibb Memorial High School. It’s a place where students can connect with nature while gaining hands-on experience in environmental stewardship.

Last April, William Knibb Memorial High School students had the unique opportunity to plant their mangrove propagules at Jobson Bay Eco-Beach Park. The excitement was evident; teachers and students were captivated by the park’s beauty, marveling that such a serene oasis was right in their backyard. We had to coax the students back onto the bus, as they were eager to explore and soak in the park’s peacefulness all day long.

Through our partnership, we aim to further advance the mission of Sea The Change Foundation by utilizing the park for educational field trips and continued mangrove propagation efforts. Together, we hope to cultivate a deeper understanding of mangroves’ vital role in coastal ecosystems and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.

In addition to these initiatives, Sea The Change Foundation is actively pursuing protected status for Jobson Bay Eco-Beach Park. We are excited to support their efforts in securing this designation, ensuring this incredible natural resource is preserved for future generations to enjoy and learn from.

As we look to the future, we are optimistic about the lasting impact of our partnership. Together, we can empower students, protect vital ecosystems, and inspire a community dedicated to sustainability.
