2021 Science Without Borders® Challenge Finalists: 11-14 year old students
The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation is pleased to announce the finalists in our 2021 Science Without Borders® Challenge! This international student art contest engages students in important ocean issues through art. For this year’s competition, students were asked to illustrate one or more of the benefits mangroves provide to people, other organisms, or the environment.
Entries to the Science Without Borders® Challenge are judged in two categories based on age. Here are the finalists selected from the younger group of applicants, students 11-14 years old:
"Seed of Hope" by Chenyue Wang, Age 11, California, United States of America
Artist's Statement: Mangrove forests are a beautiful place, not only because it looks magical. The true magic of the mangrove forest comes from how it adapts through surviving in harsh conditions and provides a home- for life to thrive. This is shown by the beauty of all the different and beautiful kinds of marine species which have found protection through the roots of the mangroves. Mangroves are under threat-and it is up to us whether to help them or not. The girl gently holding a mangrove seed is someone who cares about the mangroves, and knows that she can help to make a difference for the lives of the mangroves: even if it’s small. I hope this artwork will inspire others to conserve the beautiful mangrove forests.
