The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation is pleased to announce the semi-finalists in our 2022 Science Without Borders® Challenge! This international student art contest engages students in important ocean issues through art. For this year’s competition, students were asked to illustrate one or more actions people can take to protect coral reefs using a “Ridge to Reef”conservation approach.

Entries to the Science Without Borders® Challenge are judged in two categories based on age. Here are the semi-finalists selected from the younger group of applicants, students 11-14 years old:

"Coral reefs are a huge treasure trove and the habitat of numerous creatures. However, it is also in the midst of a major crisis. The preservation of coral reefs has become a critical task, whether it is for the ecosystem's integrity and balance, or for the harmonious development of man and the environment. This artwork tries to raise awareness about the importance of coral reef conservation. The reefs are dying primarily as a result of human actions, and it is our responsibility to speak up for them. Coral reefs are like natural gardens under the sea. They shelter and nurture thousands of marine species, providing beauty to nature and riches to humans. Unfortunately, now the garden is seeking our help and we need to take action now. If the reefs can’t speak up for themselves, we will speak out for them. If the reefs can’t scream, we will."
