2022 Science Without Borders® Challenge Semi-Finalists: 11-14 year old students

The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation is pleased to announce the semi-finalists in our 2022 Science Without Borders® Challenge! This international student art contest engages students in important ocean issues through art. For this year’s competition, students were asked to illustrate one or more actions people can take to protect coral reefs using a “Ridge to Reef”conservation approach.

Entries to the Science Without Borders® Challenge are judged in two categories based on age. Here are the semi-finalists selected from the younger group of applicants, students 11-14 years old:

"The Masked Reef" by Jannie Mei Kool, Age 13, China

Coral reefs have provided a living space for all life underwater, but over the years people have been over fishing a lot. In my artwork, the pimple in the eye represents the overfishing action that is happening. I wanted the artwork to be a mask since it would look more living compared to a regular coral. The pimple in the eye is having a ‘Medusa’ affect on the corals surrounding it. But instead of it making everything turn into stone, all of the corals that are near it are dying. This concept is suppose to show the fact that corals can not live without fish. The colors of the corals that are farther from the eye are bright and warm while the colors of the corals that are near the eye are dark and cold.
