2022 Science Without Borders® Challenge Semi-Finalists: 11-14 year old students

The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation is pleased to announce the semi-finalists in our 2022 Science Without Borders® Challenge! This international student art contest engages students in important ocean issues through art. For this year’s competition, students were asked to illustrate one or more actions people can take to protect coral reefs using a “Ridge to Reef”conservation approach.

Entries to the Science Without Borders® Challenge are judged in two categories based on age. Here are the semi-finalists selected from the younger group of applicants, students 11-14 years old:

My piece "Tipping Over" seeks to demonstrate the delicate balance that is being destroyed by the careless exploitation of our environment through the metaphor of chess pieces. In the game of chess, losing a queen to a pawn indicates that the game was recklessly played, which parallels the recklessness of humans in our destruction of the very environment that sustains us. The pawn is the "weakest" piece is chess, suggesting that small, seemingly insignificant actions contribute towards massive destruction of our environment. This theme is further explored through the details of the pieces, such as the pawn made of a plastic texture, dripping with oil, and the queen representing our lush and life-sustaining environment. The combination of these aspects in addition to the incorporation of a splashing ocean illustrates that ocean conservation efforts are essential to uphold, which can be done in small ways such as: reducing plastic use, etc.
