2022 Science Without Borders® Challenge Semi-Finalists: 15-19 year old students
The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation is pleased to announce the semi-finalists in our 2022 Science Without Borders® Challenge! This international student art contest engages students in important ocean issues through art. For this year’s competition, students were asked to illustrate one or more of the ways people can use a ridge-to-reef approach to conservation to preserve coral reefs.
Entries to the Science Without Borders® Challenge are judged in two categories based on age. Here are the semi-finalists selected from the older group of applicants, students 15-19 years old:
"Above and Below" by Jacob Luckenbaugh, Age 16, Virginia, United States of America
In this piece, I wanted to depict how important actions on land are to maintaining thriving coral reef ecosystems. At the bottom of the piece, I illustrated a thriving ecosystem, rich with color and life. Towards the top, I depicted practices that could be undertaken such as more sustainable farming practices like the utilization of cover crops as well as reforestation. The roots of these new plants on the land are directly connected with this thriving coral reef, showing how much of an impact our actions on land have on the coral reef. Overall, I wanted the piece to be bright and colorful, representative of what a healthy coral reef ecosystem looks like, filled with the great diversity of the sea.
