Bio
Azra Blythe-Mallett attended The Queen’s School where she was a Prefect, Games Captain and Head Girl before graduating in 1991, then attended The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona where she completed a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Zoology with options in marine sciences (1995). After graduation she worked as a Fisheries Officer with the Ministry of Agriculture; Fisheries Division for 4 years in the data unit and as joint project manager for the conch and lobster subprojects where she became integrally involved in marine species monitoring and conservation. While at Fisheries she represented Jamaica at the regional Queen Conch Stock Assessment and Management Workshop held in Belize.
With increased awareness of toxic phytoplankton species and their effect on shellfish, Azra Blythe-Mallett was reassigned to the Veterinary Services Division, Residue and Biochemical Laboratory (RBL) to assist in setting up monitoring programmes for seafood products such as the Conch Monitoring Programme on Pedro Bank. While there she completed my Master of Philosophy in Botany (2004), looking at Toxic Phytoplankton Forms in Natural and Artificial Systems. She has worked in the RBL lab for the past 13 years where she does phytoplankton, biotoxin (PSP, LT) and heavy metal analyses.
Special awards includes: The Queen’s School -Citizenship (1991);(UWI)- Certificates of Excellence in sports (1993-1994, 2000-2004), Certificates of Outstanding Performance in Sports (1993,1995), Outstanding Performance in Service (1995), Sportswoman of the year (2001-2002);Jamaica Hockey Federation- VP Under 21National Team (1989), Super League MVP (1995) Captain National Team (2006); Nominated for Prime ministers Youth Award (Sports), 2001.
