Bio

Julian Smith is a journalist specializing in travel and science. His articles and photographs have appeared in Smithsonian, Wired, Outside, National Geographic Traveler, New Scientist, Discover, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, and US News & World Report. With a background in biology (BA) and wildlife ecology (MS), he helped launch and edit Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, an international peer-reviewed scientific journal.
His most recent book, Crossing the Heart of Africa: An Odyssey of Love and Adventure (HarperPerennial, 2010), has won awards from the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the Banff Mountain Festival Book Competition, and the Society of American Travel Writers. Julian is also the author of travel guidebooks to El Salvador, Ecuador, Virginia and the Four Corners.
