This Jellyfish underwater video was taken during the Farasan Islands Expedition to the Red Sea.
Over the past few days, the scientists have observed some large (20-30 cm in diameter) jellyfish near the sea surface and today these jellyfish were particularly numerous. Although they may sound disgusting — jellyfish are incredibly beautiful and it is fascinating to watch how they propel themselves through the water. Whilst coming up from the dives today, we all took care to avoid their stinging tentacles, but we were also keen to photograph and video these amazing creatures. Unfortunately one of the science team got rather too close and the jellyfish collided with his camera and hands, giving him a painful (but non-toxic) sting.
